Pablo Picasso

Born in Málaga in 1881 and formed as an artist in Barcelona, Picasso remains the central figure of twentieth-century European art. From 1947 he worked intensively at the Madoura workshop in Vallauris, where he produced several thousand ceramic pieces — plates, jugs and vessels that brought the vocabulary of ancient Mediterranean pottery into modern hands. He died in Mougins in 1973.
